Probation Services

The Butler County Juvenile Probation Department conducts investigations at the direction of the Juvenile Court Judges and presents the findings of the investigations to the Judges. One of the investigative tools used by Probation is the Ohio Youth Assessment System (OYAS). The OYAS is used to assess a youth’s risk to reoffend. In addition to assessing risk as low, moderate or high, the OYAS tool identifies which of 8 criminogenic needs, characteristics or factors that have a validated correlation to criminal behavior that should be addressed to reduce the risk to reoffend. The Probation Department continues embracing the Balanced Approach Philosophy that holds youth accountable for their offense, protects the community and provides opportunities for the youth’s competency development. The OYAS aides the development a case plan that targets identified criminogenic needs and the Probation Officer uses cognitive based interventions to address those needs.

The Butler County Juvenile Probation Department has four levels of Supervision; Diversion Supervision, Court Monitoring, Basic Probation and Intensive Probation.

Diversion Supervision serves youth referred to the court for unruly behaviors and/or committing minor offenses and are willing to take responsibility for their actions.

Youth, who are awaiting disposition, are placed on Court Monitoring pending the conclusion of their case. Court Monitoring is also provided to youth who are found to be delinquent or unruly and were determined to be a low risk on the OYAS.

Basic Probation Supervision is provided to youth who are found to be delinquent and were discovered to be a moderate risk on the OYAS.

Intensive Probation Supervision is provided to youth who are found to be delinquent of Felony level offenses and were discovered to be moderate or high risk on the OYAS.  Enhanced supervision is provided by specially trained officers for youth who are found to be delinquent of specified sex offenses.
